TASFAA Committee Reports
Submitted by Kay Egbert, Director of Financial Aid, Baylor College of Dentistry-Texas A&M University System Health Science Center

The following are the reports received from the TASFAA Committee Chairs. Not all Committees are represented in this list.

Site Selection Committee
Patrick Reyna, Chair, AMS/Academic Management Services

The Site Selection Committee will be working on making a recommendation to the TASFAA Board on the 2010 Fall Conference. Due to our ever-growing membership and record-breaking conference numbers, selecting a site to host the TASFAA conference can be a challenge. Like the Fall Conference Committee, we rely on the input of your evaluations to assist our goals and objectives.

The 2006-07 Site Selection Committee will work on developing RFP's for the 2012 TASFAA conference and future New Aid Officers Workshop locations. Be on the lookout for information from our Committee as we will need the assistance of our membership to help us accomplish our objectives.

Public Relations Committee
Anne Walker, Chair, TG

NASFAA State Award: George Torres, TG and Jimmy Parker, PPSLC, were asked to submit their work on the State and Federal Legislative updates. Outcome: George replied that they would submit their application. Follow Up: Continue to follow up with George and Jimmy to see if they require further help from this committee

Action Items: TASFAA President, Kathy Bassham sent several action items to the committee. They are as follows:

  1. February is Financial Aid Awareness Month. The committee will need to get with the governor's office to get a proclamation for us. Check with Peggy Southall at THECB to make sure that the governor's office is not getting more than one request.

  2. Mat and frame the NASFAA State Award banner that TASFAA won for the TRAINetwork project to hang in the TASFAA Archives.

  3. Check into costs of replacing the TASFAA Banner that is used at SWASFAA and the TG Conference.

  4. Remind all committee chairs to take photos of their activities throughout the year.

These photos will be used for the TASFAA scrapbook and will be kept at the TASFAA archives. The scrapbook will be at the TASFAA table at the TASFAA conference and photos may also be of use should any of the committee members need them for future presentations. If the photo will be used for the Annual Report, a TG Model Release Form will be needed with the photo.

TASFAA Fall Conference: Check on availability of booth space, have the following at the booth:

  • Timeline of upcoming events
  • Counselor Handbook
  • Membership booklet
  • NAOW scrapbook
  • Annual Report

Annual Report: Contacted Andres Corderas at TG to inquire about costs, timelines, etc. for publishing the Annual Report

Fall Decentralized Training Committee
Matt Dufrene, Chair

The Fall Decentralized Training Committee has already been hard at work over the past couple of months. The committee members attended NASFAA's "train-the-trainer" event October 3-5. Trainers must attend this event in order to present NASFAA's material. The committee came back from the training with just a few weeks to prepare for the first training event in Abilene on October 26. Kudos to Rebecca Akin of Texas Tech, who, along with Matt Dufrene, served as trainer at the Abilene event. Just a week later, on November 3, the training headed to El Paso. More kudos goes out to Diana Martinez of UTSA, who, along with Matt Dufrene, presented the training at UTEP. On November 13 the training made another stop in Kingsville where Felipe Leal of TAMU-Kingsville and Diana Martinez of UTSA served as trainers. By the end of the week of November 17, the training events will have made 5 of the 8 statewide stops. Thanks to all the efforts of the committee! If we've not yet seen you at one of the training events, we hope to see you soon.

Newsletter Committee
Mariko Gomez, Chair, Texas State University

Focus/Scope: The committee met after the board meeting in San Antonio. Given the feedback from the survey, we are attempting to focus on the folks at TASFAA by highlighting changes in positions, by recruiting more articles from practicing aid administrators and by featuring some aspect of the TASFAA website. We want to avoid the cookie cutter articles from national lender reps and focus more on what TASFAA membership wants.

The committee decided that we may have a couple of issues focusing on TASFAA and then perhaps one or two expanded issues with more substantive articles. To this regard, the following assignments have been made:

  • Caroline Hernandez will serve as committee liaison to Marcus Wilson. As such, Caroline will send articles in the proper format and assist with editing.

  • Harold Whitis will edit and proof articles.

  • Chris Elam will serve as primary contact for our “Where are They Now” article informing membership about the latest personnel changes.

  • Kay Egbert will serve as primary contact in gathering the reports from the various TASFAA committees.

  • Barry Pupella and Rachel King will solicit articles from practicing aid administrators.

Survey: Given the small number who responded to initial survey and the guidance from the Board, the committee is going to resubmit the survey via the list-serve. Caroline Hernandez is overseeing this project.

Upcoming Publication: is scheduled to include an introduction of TASFAA committees (Kay Egbert); an article about being “back in the saddle” by David Ximenez (Chris Elam); a brief article on how easy it is to update your profile on TASFAA web site a “Didja Know” slant (Ima Walsh); president’s address; article on Grad Plus (Kay Egbert); summary of initial survey (Caroline Hernandez); an article about a member’s first TASFAA experience (Harold Whitis).

All of these articles will be brief and short.

New Format for Electronic Format: We have not approaches this topic, but hope to discuss with Marcus Wilson regarding the viability of revising the format.

Awareness Committee
Debra LaGrone, Chair

Is in the process of confirming the membership, and expects the committee to be sizable this year. She indicated that the meetings will primarily be conducted via conference calls, which will result in minimal travel time/expense.

Legislative Committee
Jimmy Parker, Chair

TASFAA, TG, and THECB hosted two 2 hour student financial aid workshops were held at the State Capitol for state legislative staff. Staff from several of the House Higher Education and Committee and Senate Subcommittee on Higher Education attended the sessions. Representatives from TASFAA who have participated as presenters for these sessions have included Marcus Wilson, Joe Wilcox, Terry Bazan, Mariko Gomez, June Hagler, and Kathy Bassham.

Plans are underway to host another similar session(s) early next year after the 80th Texas Legislature convenes and gets organized.

Plans are also underway to host a session for Texas Congressional Delegation staff, probably early in the spring of next year in Washington, DC.

Per your request, the Committee is in the process of drafting a proposal for the Board’s review, comment, and submission to NASFAA for consideration for a state award.

TASFAA, ATLE, & TG are preparing for the 110th Congressional Session and, because of Texas partnership among these entities, will be prepared to respond to any legislative proposals concerning the HEA or FY2007/2008 appropriations. The first response will be a Texas response to the two reports recently issued by the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance (ACSFA)and the Secretary’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education. These will not receive attention until next year. And, the Secretary’s Commission report may not receive any except where it agrees with the ACSFA’s report.

For Congressional and 80th Texas Legislature Update: See weekly postings on TASFAA’s listserv.
