President’s Message
By Kathy Bassham

What a wonderful way to end one year and begin the next! We had an incredible Fall Conference in San Antonio, with record-breaking numbers of 742 registrants. There was a huge cast of players that helped to orchestrate this event. All of them were your colleagues who had volunteered to serve on various committees. A very special thank you goes to Kim Alexander and the fall conference committee, the local arrangements committee and Karen Chambless and the sponsor relations committee. Of course, with that record crowd came some interesting challenges and we appreciate the gracious way that everyone worked with us. We discovered at SWASFAA that some of our fellow colleagues were not quite as fortunate with their record-breaking attendance. One association in particular had to have their general sessions in circus-style tents on the parking lot!

Micah Marin, Conference Chair 2007, and Michelle Enriquez, Sponsor Chair 2007, are already hard at work preparing for our next fall conference at the Galveston Island Convention Center.

Many of us were able to join our colleagues at the SWASFAA Fall Conference in Tulsa. This conference, which fell during mid-term elections, was also a very informative event and we can be proud of our partnerships with folks from our region. Please pay special attention to articles in our associational newsletters, the TASFAA Times, the SCAN, and from NASFAA for important updates that could have an impact on our students and institutions. Raul Lerma has begun his second year as the Texas Delegate to SWASFAA. Please take time to read his article to find out additional information about our regional association.

The TASFAA 2006-2007 Board met briefly during the annual conference to:

  • Elect a vice-president (Congratulations to Joe Pettibon from Texas A&M),
  • Adopt the budget, and
  • Set meeting dates for the new year (be watching for notices from Joe Pettibon and watch the calendar on the TASFAA website.)

Those individuals representing you this year are listed in the TASFAA Conference program and are also listed on the TASFAA website. A vacancy was created on the Board with Lisa Blazer’s election as your President-Elect. June Perry, Nominations Chair 2006, and I went back to the election results to select the next runner-up to fill the vacant position. Trevor Summers, Southwest Assemblies of God, has moved up to a two-year term and Tommy Young from Panola College has accepted the one-year term.

The Board’s adopted focus this year is to work on a business plan that includes a disaster recovery plan and to focus our resources on training, outreach, legislative issues and strengthening partnerships. If those items sound familiar, you have probably been exploring on the TASFAA website and found the TASFAA Vision and Preferred Future that is located on the “Inside TASFAA” section of the website. You need to stay tuned to the website for updates from your committees to see the many ways that they will work to develop this focus from a vision to a reality.

My latest information is that there have been about 150 of you who volunteered to take the challenge from the fall conference committee of “Discovering TASFAA” to heart. Lisa Blazer is working hard to make sure that each of you has a place to serve as we work together to fulfill the focus adopted by the Board for this next year.

As I close, please allow me to express my thanks to each of you for your continued friendships and the confidence you showed to me by electing me as your president. Have a safe and peaceful holiday season and a wonderful new year.

Sincerely,
Kathy
