President’s Message
By June Hagler, SMU

We had to stop the presses and hold the publication of the summer edition of the TASFAA Times for this exciting news!

TASFAA won the NASFAA 2006 State Award for Service to the Financial Aid Profession. NASFAA has recognized Texas for the creative work of the Association Activities and Resources Committee in the development of the TRAINetwork database to track outreach activities throughout the State of Texas.

The committee was created in 2002-03 when Marcus Wilson was President to address some concerns raised by a Houston legislator. The legislator felt not enough was being done for his constituencies in financial aid awareness. TASFAA did not feel that was the case, but we could not prove it.

This realization caused TASFAA to examine the larger picture. It was determined we had no quantifiable data regarding the outreach activities being done across our state. With encouragement from THECB, TG, and others, the TASFAA ad hoc committee was created.

Jim Lane chaired the committee for the first two years; he and the committee pulled together ideas and started the process. Lou Murray and Jim Anderson as co-chairs along their committee during the time Linda Gonzales-Hensgen and Pat Jost were President REALLY took the project to the award-winning level it is today.

The database collects information related to training events throughout the state. Whether the training is federal, state, institutional, private, or public, the data is being collected. The database then allows the users (families, counselors, legislators, etc.) to pull data by Texas County and city and sees what is happening or what has happened in that area of the state.

How fortunate TASFAA is to have the collective creative minds to develop such an all-encompassing product. NASFAA has recognized this talent too with the well-deserved State Award.

Please begin using this tool for the purpose it was intended. Go to TRAINetwork and see just how wonderful it is. It takes the efforts of each of you to keep the TRAINetwork viable and up to date.

Congratulations to all TASFAA members who helped conceive it, develop it, market it, and use it.

June Hagler
TASFAA President
