President's Message
By Pat Jost

June 2005

If any of you have the opportunity to hold office in a year that reauthorization and our legislature is in session….you may want to have your sanity checked. No, on the serious side, I am excited to be part of this controversial year. The support I have received from our membership, the Board and our partners have made the last two months an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Rick Renshaw and I attended the NASFAA Leadership Conference the first week of March. This was a great training opportunity and I am proud to say that we have worked to resolve most of the problems that other state associations are still struggling with. Our visits to Capital Hill were productive with most Legislative staff expressing support for student aid programs. We co-hosted the “Toast of Texas” reception in Washington on April 28 with TG and ATLE. An estimated 400 legislative staff members and 15 to 20 Legislators joined us for Texas cuisine.

The conclusion of NAOW this week brings our training opportunities to an end until Fall Conference. The NASFAA Regional Training, HS Counselors Workshops and Regional Rallies were a huge success. I regret that the Central Texas Rally was cancelled and I will work with the Board to ensure all regions of the state continue to be served with training opportunities.

For 2006, the Board approved a venue change for the NAOW. The Site Selection Committee presented three bids that met or exceed our requirements. I am pleased to announce that SMU was selected as the 2006 site. This change will take the pressure off of St. Mary’s staff and give them a well-deserved break and provide opportunities for another region of the state to host and showcase other local staff and to share new ideas for the future. We will continue reviewing our options for 2007 and beyond.

The Site Selection Committee also presented three great sites for future fall conferences. The Board approved sites for 2007 and 2008 and as soon as negotiations are complete, Don Buehrer, Chair, will share the good news with you.

If you haven’t already done so, please register online for Fall Conference in El Paso. The committee is way ahead of schedule and has great events, training and entertainment planned. On a related note, one of the best opportunities TASFAA offers its membership is the Mack Adams Scholarship. If you need assistance to attend the Fall Conference, I encourage you to apply soon since the conference is just around the corner.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
