President's Message
by Marcus Wilson

Summer afternoon — summer afternoon; to me, those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.
  - Henry James
(1843-1916)

July is one of my favorite months. I enjoy the celebration of our country’s independence, the sunny days, swimming pools and fire crackers…summer.

With July, comes the realization that August is close on its heels, the end of summer and a new school year. The panic attacks, the mental questions…”Are we ready for the fall?” “Are the disbursement dates right?” “Will we get the money to the students on time?”

Or, this year the added stress and questions like “Do we have the funds to attend the Fall Conference?” “What have I forgotten to do for TASFAA?” “Will my school raise tuition for the spring and force us to re-package all students?” Oh well, when sleep finally does come, savor it.

The TASFAA committees and volunteers continue making excellent progress. Once again I want to thank Jimmy Parker, our Legislative Issues Committee Chair. His efforts and achievements have been exceptional during the most difficult of times. In addition, we owe a huge thank you to others that have had a major impact on our legislative success this year. Thanks to Gorge Torres, Mike Novak, Arnold Trejo and Carol McDonald for the success your efforts brought us.

Success is dependent on effort. - Sophocles (c. 496-406 B.C.)

Melissa O’Conner, Training Committee Chair, and her committee members led us to another outstanding New Aid Officer’s Workshop. I have found that Melissa is one of those folks that MAKE things happen. Thank you, Melissa, committee members and everyone that participated in the NAOW.

At our May Board meeting, we approved some changes for the Early Awareness Committee (Jan Benton). The committee’s focus has been broadened to address awareness at all levels. To address this enhancement, the committee has been renamed the Awareness Committee.

The Fall Conference Committee (Don Buehrer) has been very busy working to insure the conference is a great success by meeting our training needs with timely sessions and is a great value. We are all pleased with the initiative many of our partners are taking to provide ground transportation to the conference for our members. It is such an encouragement to see challenges turned into opportunities.

I want to thank ALL of our volunteers, Committee Chairs and Board Members. Without your commitment, we would not exist. Thanks for your efforts, those we know about and especially for the things you do that never are recognized.

Prepare your mind to receive the best that life has to offer.
 - Earnest Holmes (1887-1960)

I hope you are having a great summer and that everything is in place for a very successful 03-04 school year.

See ya in Wichita Falls.
Sincerely,
Marcus
