Robert M. "Bob" Logan
Inducted October 1, 1998
Lieutenant
Colonel Robert M. "Bob" Logan is remembered for his
service, dedication and long-term commitment to our profession.
After his death, July 15, 1998, the Association of Former Students
at Texas A&M University established a perpetual loan program
in his name. The tremendous impact he had on the lives of students
and financial aid professionals will long be remembered.
Bob Logan developed and organized the Office of Student Financial
Aid at Texas A&M University in 1963, and served as its Director
until retirement in 1979. He totally gave of himself for the welfare
of the student body through the strong development of scholarship
and financial aid programs at the University. He was instrumental
in the development of the President Scholarship Program at Texas
A&M which served as a model program and laid the foundation
for the development of other honor scholar programs on the state
and national level.
He was a charter member of the Southwest Association of Student
Financial Aid Administrators (SWASFAA) and was involved in the
establishment and early development of the Texas Association of
Student Financial Aid Administrators (TASFAA). On numerous occasions,
Bob Logan served as a consultant on the highly technical and complex
Texas Opportunity Plan Loan Program administered by the Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board, which eventually became known
as the Hinson-Hazelwood College Student Loan Program.
For fourteen years he provided advice and sound judgement for
The College Board in the development of financial aid policy.
His service to The College Board included the Regional Executive
Committee for the Southwest Region. He also served on the College
Scholarship Service Assembly Council, a group of nationally known
financial aid administrators. In 1974, the U. S. Department of
Education appointed him to be the first State Trainer for the
Basic Educational Opportunity Grant program, now known as the
Pell Grant program.
Bob Logan was nominated by his peers for the Texas A&M Distinguished
Achievement Award as an outstanding administrator in the area
of student financial aid. Following his retirement in 1979, he
was granted the title of "Director Emeritus" of Financial
Aid at Texas A&M on the merit that he touched the lives of
thousands of young men and women attending the University. As
Director Emeritus, he continued to be an ambassador for student
financial in his everyday walk through life.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Southeast Texas Higher
Education Authority, which later became the Greater Texas Student
Loan Corporation. He served as the first Chairman of the Board
from 1979 to 1984. He continued serving as a member of the Board
through 1985, until he resigned to care for his life long partner,
Helen. In 1997, he was reappointed to the Board.
Bob Logan's untiring commitment to shape and mold institutional,
state, and national financial aid programs, to encourage qualified
students to pursue higher education and assist them in obtaining
the needed resources to achieve their educational goal has been
his hallmark and gift to the student financial aid profession.
